Terms

The terms for using Torcul.

What this is

Torcul turns a manuscript into a print-ready interior PDF, an EPUB, and optionally a cover. It checks those files against the requirements published by print-on-demand retailers and reports what it finds. Using it means you accept these terms.

Who runs it

Torcul is run from Türkiye. Where these terms say we or us, they mean Torcul, and the agreement for using the service is with Torcul.

What it does not promise

Not acceptance. A clean report means your file met the published requirements as of the date shown on that report. Retailers change their requirements, apply their own additional judgment, and decide for themselves. We are not affiliated with any of them and cannot bind them.

Not good typography. No software can judge that. The tool measures what can be measured and reports it. The rest you judge on paper.

Not availability. The service may be down or slow, and we do not promise it will be free of errors. Download your files as soon as you have them: a job is deleted six hours after upload and cannot be recovered.

Shutting down is the one exception, because that would be our decision rather than an accident. If we close the service, we email everyone holding a licence at least 90 days before it stops. Until it stops, every book on that licence can be rebuilt as often as you want. This is a promise about notice, not a promise to run forever.

Your manuscript is yours

You keep every right in what you upload. You give us permission to store and process it for one purpose — producing the files you asked for — and only for as long as that takes. The job is deleted after six hours at most. See the privacy page.

The files that come out are yours too. We claim no share of a book, no royalty, and no credit. You may sell what you make, in any quantity, without telling us.

That does not expire with the service. A PDF and an EPUB produced here are finished, standard files with their fonts embedded. Your right to print, publish and sell the books made from them is permanent. It does not depend on this service continuing to exist, on any account staying open, or on any further payment.

The fonts your books are set in are licensed under the SIL Open Font License, which permits embedding in a document you sell. That license sits with the file, not with you, and it does not restrict what you do with the book.

The other way round, the service is ours: the software, this site and the name Torcul. A licence lets you use them to make your book. It does not transfer any of them to you.

What you undertake

  • That you have the right to the manuscript you upload.
  • Not to upload anything unlawful, or anything that infringes somebody else's rights.
  • Not to use the service for fraud or spam, and not to try to get round the licence check or interfere with the service's security.
  • Not to use the service in a way designed to overload it. The published limits are built into the software and are not a challenge.

If somebody breaks these, or pays with money that turns out not to be theirs, we may stop serving them and revoke the key involved. Anything already downloaded stays on their disk, as it would anyway.

Payment

Building a book is free. You upload a manuscript, correct what we read from it, and choose how the book looks. You can then turn every page of the finished book and read every measurement taken off it. What a payment buys is the files: the print interior, the ebook, the cover and the paper proof. The settings file holding your corrections is free and stays free whatever you decide.

One licence, one payment: $29 for one book. It attaches to the first book it opens and opens that book for ever, including when you rebuild it later from its settings file. We recognise the book two ways: by the title and author it is printed under, and by its words. So correcting a typo costs nothing, and neither does renaming the book. A different book needs a second licence. It is not a subscription and it needs no account: a licence is a key, and the key is what you keep.

A licence is for you. Your browser remembers the key on the machine you used it on, so you are not asked for it again. A key that is passed around reaches a daily ceiling and stops.

Paddle sells it. Our order process is conducted by our online reseller Paddle.com. Paddle.com is the Merchant of Record for all our orders, so your purchase contract is with Paddle, under their buyer terms, and theirs is the name your card statement shows. They take the payment, charge any tax due on it, and send the receipt.

Refunds

Fourteen days, until you download. Within 14 days of buying, you can have a full refund for any reason, as long as you have not yet downloaded the files you paid for. Those files are the print PDF, the EPUB, the cover and the paper proof. Every page of your book can be looked at before you pay, free.

Downloading ends it. Before you pay, you agree that the files are yours at once and that downloading one ends the 14-day refund. After that, a refund is still yours if a file we produced is defective, or if the law where you live gives you more. We do not refund where there is evidence of fraud or refund abuse.

To ask, use the link in the receipt Paddle emailed you, look the order up at paddle.net, or write to info@torcul.com with your order number. The money goes back to the card or account you paid with.

We revoke the key when we refund it. From that moment it opens nothing, and the files of a book it has already unlocked can no longer be downloaded. We ask that you not go on using files you have been refunded for.

If something goes wrong

Tell us at info@torcul.com. If a file we produced is defective and you paid for it, you choose the remedy: a corrected file, or your money back.

Beyond that, and to the extent the law allows, our liability is limited to what you paid for the title in question. We are not liable for a retailer's decision, for lost sales, or for a print run made from a file you did not check.

Nothing here limits liability for death, personal injury, fraud, or anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. If you are a consumer, your statutory rights are untouched by any of this.

The rest

These terms are governed by the law of Türkiye, and the courts of Türkiye have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer living in another country, you also keep the protection of that country's mandatory consumer law, and you may bring a claim in its courts. If one clause is unenforceable, the rest still stands. If we change these terms, the version that applies is the one published when you used the service, and the date below changes.
